Everyone who has come through the Faceting Academy doors has heard the stories. About the appraiser whose mentoring set the cornerstone of my approach to faceting as: “maximizing the tradable value in every rough”. By now, I think some might suspect he was myth I created to anchor certain ideas in the minds of students.
But the stories are all true …

In 2010, I started a video project of interview sessions with people who had influenced my approach to faceting – starting with Reggie Olson. But, life happened, I got sidetracked, and the video files became lost in a hard drive crash. And, in 2018, the man, my friend and treasured mentor, was himself gone.
In March, 2023, while cleaning up a stack of old hard drives, I found unknown backup copies of the interviews with Reggie. The contents of those conversations will be on this page – some publicly available, and some reserved to site supporters and registered students.
